Hair Transplants - Massachusetts & Rhode Island
I have specialized in the hair transplantation field of cosmetic surgery in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area for 20 years. It has been more than a decade since I last performed a plug hair transplant procedure in order to stimulate hair replacement in my patients. It amazes me, though, that so many people continue to think that the medical procedures involving hair transplantation still make use of the old plug technique.
Many people, in fact, are still confused as to what hair transplants actually involve. Because the donor hair (those follicles around the sides and back of one's head) is programmed to grow on a permanent basis, after a hair restoration surgeon redistributes these hairs to thinning or bald areas of the scalp during hair transplantation, they will maintain their integrity and grow on forever.
I can perform hair transplants anywhere on the body in my Massachusetts and Rhode Island offices, including eyebrow hair transplantation, for aesthetics or for correction after injury, and hair restoration of sideburns in men or women who have had facelifts. Restoration of hairlines destroyed or changed due to brow lifts, or other conditions are not uncommonly performed in our hair replacement offices conveniently located in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Though not very common, hair transplants to the pubic area are sometimes requested in those with sparse hair.
The Hair Transplantation Procedure
While seated in a very comfortable chair designed specifically for hair transplants, my patients watch movies or television during their hair replacement procedures. During the hair transplantation surgery, the patient typically feels nothing other than the touching and/or a pressure sensation.
After local anesthesia is nearly painlessly applied to the hair transplantation donor area, the donor strip is harvested for hair replacement. Next, it is carefully sutured closed, leaving only (in most individuals) a pencil-line wide scar. These stitches are unnoticeable after the hair transplants are inserted and removed in about a week.
With the use of a dissecting microscope or magnification, meticulous care, and longstanding experience in hair replacement, we now transplant thousands of hairs during a single hair transplantation procedure. These tiny follicular unit grafts contain only one to four hairs that are carefully and expertly placed in order to create a most natural appearing result after the hair transplants have been transferred.
In special cases such as correction or refinement of previous hair replacement methods, larger grafts may be utilized to obtain the desired outcome; you see one size doesn't always fit all, nor is only one surgical hair transplantation technique always the right one for all patients. This is where my 20 years of clinical expertise in hair restoration surgery is of critical importance. These grafts are then gently inserted into the tiny incisions I create in the recipient area - the zone of thinning or baldness where the hair transplants are implanted.
After the hair transplantation procedure is completed in one of my Rhode Island or Massachusetts offices, we shampoo the patient's scalp, blow-dry and style the hair, and he or she leaves my offices without any bandages at all. Most patients drive themselves to and from the office. If pre-operative medications are requested during the hair replacement surgery, however, they will need a ride home or back to work after the hair transplants have been inserted.
The hairs in the transplanted grafts will grow and then fall out of the follicles about three to four weeks after the hair replacement procedure. Approximately four months after the hair transplants were implanted, the new, permanently growing hairs will grow at the normal rate of hair growth in humans, namely, 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month.
For the past 10 years, I have been using the copper peptide, GRAFTCYTE, with wonderful success in my hair restoration patients in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It is used only for the first few days after hair replacement surgery. It increases the percentage of hairs that begin to grow immediately after the hair transplants were inserted, and it decreases the four-month regrowth interval for the hairs that do shed. This may not seem all that important, but my patients getting hair transplants often tell me that the waiting period for regrowth is, indeed, the worst part of the entire hair transplantation process! With Graftcyte usage, we can decrease the hair replacement period by about two months -- much, much shorter than the typical waiting time. The sooner it begins to grow after receiving hair transplants, the sooner it will be long enough to be cosmetically significant.

Hair Replacement for Men and Women
Approximately 10 percent of all my hair replacement surgical patients are women. This is quite a high percentage compared to the typical hair transplantation surgeon's practice.
In our society, it is "normal" for a man to lose his hair, and look into the hair transplants process. He usually doesn't like it, but it is considered normal by society.
