Our experienced hair loss doctor and founder, Dr. Robert Leonard, has been practicing in the field of hair restoration surgery for the last 30 years. To provide the best care and the latest treatment options for our patients, he and our chief hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Matthew Lopresti, have added the ARTAS® Robotic System to our armamentarium of surgical services.

artas-logoThe ARTAS® Robotic System is the most sophisticated device available anywhere in the world to assist our doctors in harvesting grafts using the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) technique. The precision in harvesting follicular units with this state-of-the-art FUE device is achieved through a wide range of technological advances. These include using a pair of infrared cameras, accurate calculation of follicular unit numbers and density, and advanced specialized software that calculates the exact angle and depth of the follicular units. This all is controlled under the supervision of our extensively trained surgeons.

Offering the ARTAS® System to our patients provides them with a surgical technique that efficiently harvests follicular units in a fashion that does not leave a linear scar in the donor area. This allows patients to wear their hair very short in the donor area with virtually no noticeable evidence of having had a hair transplant procedure.

What to Expect From the ARTAS® Robotic Procedure

We encourage you to wear comfortable clothing for your ARTAS® procedure, which will most likely take place in the morning. You will be seated for the duration of treatment, although you will be allowed to take breaks as needed, and our skilled team will make every effort to make your time with us as pleasant as possible. A local anesthetic will be administered, which allows you to remain awake and responsive while experiencing minimal pain. In fact, most patients report little or no discomfort. Dr. Matthew Lopresti or Dr. Robert Leonard will be supervising and managing the entire procedure.

The ARTAS® System uses a unique algorithm to select the best hairs for harvesting. This program is also designed to preserve the natural appearance of the donor area. Once harvested, the follicular units will be transplanted into designated locations based on your individual treatment plan. Once the surgery is complete, you can return home the same day, and Dr. Lopresti or Dr. Leonard will provide you with after-care instructions. These directions can include recommendations for sleeping, protecting your scalp from the sun, washing your hair, and applying or taking medication. In the event you experience any discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers can be used. Most patients return to normal activity within a few days, although your experience may vary.

Your newly transplanted hair, like your natural hair, will begin to grow steadily with time. Generally, you should begin to see new hair growth after three to four months, with more significant hair growth after about six months, and final results at about 18 months. Since this is your own natural hair, you will be able to style it according to your preferences.
