Eyebrow Restoration

Eyebrows do more than most people realize. They help frame your face, shape your expression, and create balance in your overall appearance. When your eyebrows are thin, sparse, or uneven, it can change the way you see yourself in the mirror and impact your confidence in subtle but meaningful ways. For many people, fuller, natural-looking eyebrows are not just about appearance, they are about feeling more like yourself again. Dr. Matthew Lopresti and Dr. Mary Lopresti, our experienced hair restoration surgeons, can help you restore your eyebrows with successful results.

What Causes Eyebrow Hair Loss?

Eyebrow hair loss can happen for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest causes we see is years of over-plucking and over-shaping. What starts as cleaning up your brows or chasing a certain look can slowly wear down the hair follicles over time, often without you realizing it until your brows start looking thinner, patchier, or harder to fill in. It can be frustrating to notice and even harder when you realize it has been happening little by little. The important thing to know is that repeated plucking and constant stress on the follicles can eventually cause them to stop growing for good. That is why it is so important to stop early. The sooner you give your brows a break, the better the chance you have of protecting the hair you still have and avoiding more permanent eyebrow hair loss.

Other times, eyebrow hair loss is simply genetic. Some families do not grow thick eyebrows. There are also medical causes such as thyroid disease and chronic anemia. Traumatic injury sustained from an accident, such as a motor vehicle crash, may also affect eyebrow growth. Additionally, lacerations and burns may result in scarring that makes hair growth in this area impossible. These are all common reasons seen in our practice on a regular basis.

What Is Eyebrow Restoration?

Eyebrow restoration is all about rebuilding, reshaping, and restoring eyebrows that have become thin, uneven, or sparse over time. Whether it happened from years of over-plucking, a medical condition, an injury, or simply genetics, losing your eyebrows can change the way you look and feel in a bigger way than most people expect. For many people, it is not just about appearance. It is about confidence, expression, and feeling like yourself again.

The good news is there are real solutions, and you do not have to settle for constantly filling them in or feeling unhappy with how they look. At Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, Dr. Matthew Lopresti and Dr. Mary Lopresti take a personalized approach to eyebrow restoration because every patient’s brows, facial features, and goals are different. For some, non-surgical treatments can help strengthen existing hair and support regrowth. For others, eyebrow transplant surgery can permanently restore fuller, natural-looking eyebrows using your own hair follicles. In many cases, combining both approaches can create the most natural and complete result.

Am I a Candidate for Eyebrow Restoration?

For eyebrow transplant surgery, having a healthy donor area is one of the most important parts of the process because that is where the hair follicles are harvested from. But just as important as the donor hair is making sure you and our team are aligned on what is realistic and what eyebrow transplant surgery can truly achieve. Eyebrow restoration is not a copy and paste process, and while we can create fuller, natural-looking eyebrows, we cannot turn every brow into a celebrity Instagram filter overnight.

The best candidates for eyebrow transplant surgery are those with stable eyebrow hair loss, realistic expectations, and a clear vision of the eyebrow shape and density they want to restore. Dr. Matthew Lopresti works closely with each patient to design an eyebrow restoration plan that fits their facial structure, natural brow pattern, and long-term goals. Taking the time to get on the same page from the start is one of the most important steps in achieving successful, natural-looking eyebrow transplant results that you will feel confident about for years to come.

What Are My Eyebrow Restoration Options?

Our skilled hair restoration surgeons address hair loss in the eyebrows similarly to that of the scalp. There are three main solutions they recommend:

Medical Stabilization

When it comes to treating eyebrow thinning, medication can sometimes play an important role in helping stabilize hair loss and encourage regrowth. At Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, our doctors often recommend topical Minoxidil, commonly known as Rogaine®, as one of the most effective non-surgical options for supporting eyebrow hair regrowth. While it is not specifically FDA approved for eyebrows, it has shown promising results in helping improve thickness and density for patients looking to restore fuller, healthier-looking brows. For many patients, medical treatment can be a great first step before considering eyebrow transplant surgery.

Eyebrow Transplantation

Those who prefer a more long-term solution can opt for a hair transplant. The procedure consists of placing mostly single hair follicles, but also strategically-located grafts that are slightly larger, in the desired area. Once the single (and sometimes double) hair grafts are harvested and trimmed from the donor area, they are ready for transplantation. With this technique, the patient is asked to provide his or her idea of the shape they wish to achieve. If appropriate and realistic, one of our surgeons will mark the area and prepare it with a local anesthetic.

The surgeons will then make tiny, meticulous incisions in the treatment area, following the proper directions, angulations, and shape of the soon-to-be restored eyebrows. The grafts are then carefully planted into the incisions. The area will then be cleansed and the patient can leave the office without bandages. We will provide postoperative instructions that will help make the recovery experience as quick and comfortable as possible.

Since every patient’s goal typically is to achieve a natural look, it is important that one consults an experienced hair restoration surgeon to perform this delicate procedure. Dr. Lopresti and Dr. Leonard often recommend the avoidance of cosmetic specialists who perform eyebrow restoration but not hair restoration.

Camouflage

Following the procedure, camouflage agents such as makeup, micropigmentation (tattooing), and other cosmetic methods are helpful, but not always needed to complement the results of the procedure.

What Is Eyebrow Restoration Recovery Like?

Eyebrow transplant surgery is a relatively simple outpatient procedure that usually takes about four hours, depending on your treatment plan, and you will head home the same day. Our goal is to make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible, and most patients are surprised by how easy and manageable the process feels. Afterward, it is normal to have a little soreness or tenderness for a short period, but downtime is generally minimal.

Like with a scalp hair transplant, the newly transplanted eyebrow hairs will grow at first, then shed within the first two to three weeks. It can feel a little strange if you are not expecting it, but it is a completely normal part of the eyebrow transplant recovery process. After that, the follicles rest for about three to four months before new growth begins. From there, eyebrow hair regrowth happens gradually, usually at a rate of about a quarter inch per month. Most patients start noticing visible improvement around six months, with final eyebrow transplant results continuing to develop over 12 to 18 months.

One thing to keep in mind is that transplanted eyebrow hairs come from the scalp, so at first they may grow a little longer and faster than your natural brows. That means some regular trimming will likely be part of the routine to keep them looking clean and natural. Over time, we often see these hairs start to blend in and take on more of the characteristics of natural eyebrow hair, but every person’s experience is a little different. That is part of what makes eyebrow restoration so personal.

How Long Does Eyebrow Restoration Last?

Eyebrow transplant surgery is designed to be a long-lasting solution. Because the transplanted follicles are taken from the back of the scalp, they are genetically programmed to continue growing, just as they would in their original location. Once the follicles settle and new growth begins, the results are considered permanent.

As with scalp hair transplants, there is an initial shedding phase in the first few weeks before new growth begins. Most patients start to see meaningful results around six months, with final results visible at around 18 months.

For patients using medical treatments like Rogaine, continued use is necessary to maintain results over time. Our team will guide you through what to expect and how to care for your results for the long term.
