ISHRS Survey Finds Total Number of Surgical Hair Restoration Procedures Worldwide Jumped 12 Percent in 2008

Cranston, Rhode Island – Portuguese-born Luis Costa was hospitalized for a few weeks back in 2005 after getting in an accident. The stitches placed within his scalp required removal of the hair piece he had worn for nearly 20 years. The experience impacted Costa, leading him to life-changing hair restoration surgery.

“I was very embarrassed,” said the 48-year-old Warwick, Rhode Island, resident. “At that point, I decided that I was all done with it. Later, I was watching TV and saw a commercial for Dr. Robert Leonard. My wife and I went to speak to him and felt very comfortable with him, and I’m very happy and pleased with the results.”
The number of hair restoration patients worldwide increased 26 percent in 2008, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), with the majority of hair restoration patients being men. With 24 years of experience in hair restoration, Dr. Leonard (http://www.hairdr.com) brings a wealth of knowledge in evaluating both men and women interested in learning about what can be done for their hair loss problem. Providing hair loss treatment in RI, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Leonard Hair Transplant Associates is dedicated to maintaining an honest, realistic medical evaluation of each individual’s needs.
Costa, who moved to the U.S. in 1979, first started losing his hair in his early 20s. Upon noticing the physical change, he joined a “hair club”. Not meeting with success, Costa then taped on a hair piece for 18 years, ultimately seeking out Dr. Leonard’s services.

“People look at you and notice that your hair looks fake,” Costa said of wearing the hair piece, noting that he had to regularly avoid swimming, soccer, and even playing with his children.

“It really affected my self confidence,” he added. “When you wear a hair piece, you don’t want anyone to touch it.”

Costa started hair transplantation with Dr. Leonard in 2005.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to work with deserving people such as Luis and help them make such an important change that offers them a whole new lease on life,” said Dr. Leonard. “Having undergone hair restoration surgery, Luis is a new and improved more confident individual who has been able to resume a healthy, happy, active, full life with his family and friends – what a gift.”

“It’s the best thing that has happened to me,” Costa said. “Now I can do anything. I swim – no worries. I play soccer. I play rough with the kids. I feel very comfortable. Everyone gives me compliments.

“I would recommend the procedure and Dr. Leonard to anyone, and I do all the time,” said Costa. “Some of my friends knew me bald, and now they see me with hair and I always tell them, ‘I went to see Dr. Len!'”
