New Survey Finds Number of Hair Restoration Procedures Performed Worldwide Increased by 11%

CRANSTON, Rhode Island – Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon and founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, says new statistics released today as part of a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) show lackluster worldwide economic growth in 2010 did not limit the number of people investing in hair restoration surgery to treat hair loss.

“Hair is an integral part of a person’s identity,” said Dr. Leonard, a founding member and former President of ISHRS, the world’s leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration. “Whether you are looking for an edge in the increasingly competitive workplace, or simply satisfaction in your personal life, hair restoration surgery offers the confidence many people are seeking.”

Approximately 279,381 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2010, an 11 percent increase over 2008. This increase coincides with a significant jump in the total number of hair restoration patients worldwide – from 811,363 patients in 2008 to 923,599 patients in 2010.

According to the survey, the vast majority (83 percent) of first time hair restoration patients in 2010 were between 30 and 49 years old, running contrary to the belief that hair restoration surgery is only for older men.

In addition, an increasing number of women are also seeking help for hair loss. In 2010, 14.1 percent of hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were female, marking a 24 percent increase since 2004.

“As the discussion about hair loss goes mainstream, more women are discovering the advantages of hair restoration,” said Dr. Leonard. “The key to preventing future hair loss is early intervention. This survey shows more people – both men and women – are heeding this advice, treating their hair loss before it becomes noticeable.”
