Chief Hair Restoration Surgeon Dr. Matthew Lopresti

Dr. Matthew Lopresti, DO, is the Chief Hair Restoration Surgeon at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, where he treats men and women experiencing hair loss in Boston, throughout Massachusetts and across New England. Because every person’s hair loss is different, he takes the time to understand what is happening, what the patient wants to achieve and which treatment makes the most sense for the future. Dr. Lopresti personally performs both Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) and traditional Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), while also offering nonsurgical hair loss treatments for patients who may not need or be ready for surgery
Background and Education
Dr. Lopresti earned his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Internship year at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Pennsylvania, followed by three years of Residency at Boston Medical Center. He finished his subspecialty training through Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lopresti successfully completed a two-year preceptorship in hair restoration surgery directly under Dr. Robert Leonard, retired founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, a 30-year veteran in the field.
As a Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, Dr. Lopresti holds a distinction known as FISHRS. This designation recognizes hair restoration surgeons who have met exceptional educational standards and remain actively involved in advancing their knowledge within the field. Maintaining Fellow status requires surgeons to continue meeting established educational criteria over time.
His experience includes lecturing nationally and internationally on the surgical and medical treatment of hair loss. By bringing both sides of hair restoration together, he can personally perform Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) and traditional Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), while also developing nonsurgical treatment plans that may include PRP with ACell, finasteride and minoxidil when medically appropriate
What Is a Hair Restoration Surgeon?
A hair restoration, or hair transplant, surgeon is a licensed physician who offers focused treatment for hair thinning and loss using a number of techniques, often both surgical and non-surgical. While technically any surgeon can perform hair transplantation, only hair restoration surgeons have dedicated their full-time practice, and their training, to the art and science of reducing hair loss and restoring hair. The reason why a patient may wish to choose a hair restoration surgeon over another physician who offers treatment as one of many unrelated procedures is for the advanced training, skill, and experience. Hair restoration is a complex, multifaceted field with constantly evolving techniques and technology. Remaining at the forefront of this industry is necessary to provide the best results in the safest environment possible, something that may be difficult for plastic or general surgeons, dermatologists, or doctors practicing in other fields who must divide their time among a vast number of different aesthetic techniques.
What Sets Dr. Lopresti Apart?
The right hair loss treatment begins with understanding the person, not simply choosing a procedure. Every consultation includes a careful review of the patient’s pattern of hair loss, available donor hair, medical history and long term goals. This allows Dr. Lopresti to create a plan based on what can realistically be achieved now and how the patient’s hair may change in the future.
With experience in both surgical and nonsurgical hair restoration, he can recommend the option that best fits each patient rather than taking the same approach with everyone. Treatment may include Follicular Unit Excision (FUE), traditional Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), PRP with ACell, finasteride or minoxidil. His continuing education and participation in medical meetings throughout the United States and abroad help keep the practice current with developments in hair loss treatment.
Patients researching a hair loss doctor or hair transplant surgeon in Massachusetts can review Dr. Lopresti’s before and after photographs. During the consultation, he will explain the available options, answer questions and help the patient make an informed decision about treatment. Your first conversation is with an experienced member of the Leonard Hair Transplant Associates team who will listen to your concerns, review your hair loss and explain the available options. If hair transplant surgery is appropriate, Dr. Matthew Lopresti personally develops your surgical plan and performs your FUE or FUT procedure.
Hobbies and Home Life
Dr. Lopresti is a devoted husband and father, and nothing is more important to him than spending quality time with his family. He believes in living a healthy, balanced lifestyle, which includes staying active through regular workouts, enjoying the outdoors, and relaxing at the beach. A true New Englander at heart, he loves exploring Maine, sampling local craft beers, and cheering on his favorite Boston sports teams.
His work also fuels another love, travel. Attending surgical meetings across the country and around the world gives him the opportunity to learn the latest techniques, share knowledge with colleagues, and bring the most advanced care back to his patients, always with the goal of helping them feel confident and their best selves.
Questions to Ask Your Hair Restoration Surgeon
We encourage patients to be their own health care advocates as much as they can, which begins with asking the right questions. A well-educated hair restoration surgeon should be happy to answer inquiries about their experience and training, as well as which procedures can offer you the best results and why, during your initial consultation. Some of the questions that can help you determine whether a hair restoration surgeon is right for you include:
- What type of procedure is right for me?
- Do you offer multiple hair restoration techniques?
- Do you offer multiple non-surgical options?
- Will I need future hair transplants?
- Do you have before-and-after photos I can see?
- Do I have a sufficient volume of donor hair to achieve my goals?
- Are my cosmetic goals reasonable?
- How long will the procedure last?
- Will the results look natural?
- How much will my procedure cost?
With this information, you can begin to develop an idea of what may be involved in your treatment as well as whether you feel comfortable with your prospective surgeon. You want someone who listens to your concerns and desired outcome, assists you in becoming well-informed about your options, and explains their recommended approach clearly.
