Why GLP 1 Weight Loss Meds May Trigger Hair Shedding

Losing weight and suddenly seeing more hair in the shower? You are not imagining it. Let’s talk about what may be happening and what I would do next.

If you are taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound and suddenly seeing more hair in your brush, take a breath. I am hearing this from more patients, and it does not automatically mean your hair loss is permanent.

Here is what may be going on. The medication may not be directly harming your follicles. Rapid weight loss and changes in nutrition can place real stress on the body, causing more hairs to shift into a resting phase.

The tricky part? Temporary shedding can also reveal genetic thinning that was already quietly developing. That is why I would want to take a closer look before you start guessing at a treatment.

WHAT MAY BE GOING ON?

  1. Your body noticed the change – Rapid weight loss can temporarily shift more hairs out of their normal growth rhythm.
  2. Your nutrition may have shifted – Eating less can sometimes mean less protein and fewer nutrients reaching your follicles.
  3. It may not be just one thing- Temporary shedding and genetic hair loss can happen at the same time. That is where an assessment helps.

MY TAKE

This may be temporary. But I would not leave you guessing. Many people do see their hair recover as the body settles. My job is to help determine whether you are simply shedding or whether something else is happening too.

WHEN I WOULD WANT TO SEE YOU

WHAT I WOULD DO NEXT

  1. Do not change your medication on your own – Speak with the clinician managing your GLP 1 medication before making any changes.
  2. Give your body the basic – Review your nutrition, protein intake, pace of weight loss and any possible medical factors.
  3. Let us take a real look – We can help separate temporary shedding from progressive genetic hair loss and discuss whether treatment may be appropriate.
