Signs Women Should Be Aware of for Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common problem faced by both men and women, but it can be especially distressing for women as hair is often seen as an important aspect of femininity. While it is normal to lose 50-100 strands of hair a day, excessive hair loss can be a sign of an underlying problem. In this blog, we will discuss some signs women should be aware of for losing their hair, as well as the available treatments to treat female hair loss.

Signs Women Should Be Aware of for Hair Loss

  1. Excessive Hair Shedding: If you notice an increase in the amount of hair you are shedding when you brush or wash your hair, it may be a sign of hair loss.
  2. Thinning Hair: If you notice that your hair is becoming thinner, especially around the crown of your head or on the sides, it may be a sign of hair loss.
  3. Widening Part Line: If you notice that your part line is becoming wider or that you can see more of your scalp, it may be a sign of hair loss.
  4. Receding Hairline: If you notice that your hairline is receding, especially around the temples, it may be a sign of hair loss.
  5. Bald Spots: If you notice any bald spots on your scalp, it may be a sign of hair loss.

Treatments Available to Treat Female Hair Loss

  1. Rogaine: An over the counter medication that is commonly used to treat hair loss in both men and women. It contains the active ingredient minoxidil, which works by widening blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased blood flow can help to stimulate hair growth in areas where hair loss has occurred.
  2. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) with ACell: This in office treatment option for female hair loss involves injecting a combination of the patient’s own plasma and ACell, a regenerative matrix, into the scalp. It can stimulate hair follicles and promote the growth of new, healthy hair. The treatment is performed in our Newton office and takes about 30-60 minutes to complete.
  3. Hair Transplant Surgery: Performed by Hair Restoration Surgeon Dr. Lopresti, this procedure involves taking hair follicles from the back of the scalp and transplanting them into the thinning or balding areas of the scalp. It is a safe and effective option for women with female pattern hair loss and takes over a year to show full results.
  4. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): There are a variety of devices available on the market that use LLLT to treat hair loss in women, however, the Auxo A300 uses Surface Mount Technology. This technology casts a wider energy beam and one that goes more deeply into the scalp skin where the blood vessels reside. Laser therapy can improve the thickness and quality of hair, which can lead to fuller, healthier-looking hair.

Hair loss is a common problem that can be distressing for women. It is important to be aware of the signs of hair loss and to seek medical advice if you are concerned. There are several treatments available to treat female hair loss, and it is important to schedule a free consultation with our office to determine which treatment is right for you.
