What Are the Differences Between Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)?

Advances in hair restoration have given patients a variety of options to address hair thinning and loss. Hair transplant surgery can be a very effective way to restore hair with beautiful, natural-looking results, and two techniques are particularly popular. At Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, our experienced hair restoration surgeons offer both traditional strip and FUE (follicular unit excision) approaches to hair transplant surgery. During your initial consultation, Dr. Robert Leonard and Dr. Matthew Lopresti can help you determine which method is ideal for your needs and goals.

In the traditional strip harvesting method, a thin linear section of hair and scalp is removed from the donor area—the back and sides of the head. The incision line typically heals well and can be concealed by surrounding hair, depending on your hairstyle and other factors unique to you. Under magnification, grafts are then created from the strip of hair, which will be transplanted into the area of concern. We take great care to make this experience as comfortable and effective as possible, as your results are a high priority.

In the FUE technique, the linear scar is eliminated.  This method of hair transplantation can make graft harvesting highly precise and efficient while leaving little evidence of scarring, regardless of hairstyle. This is due to the fact that the follicular units are collected via a punch-like process. No scalpels or staples are needed. Operation and recovery time can also be reduced. The Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) technique is one of the most advanced methods available for hair transplantation, but it’s not right for everyone. Drs. Leonard and Lopresti can provide additional information and guidance during your initial meeting.
